Case Study: Step Into Health connects service leavers to NHS careers with NHS Employers

A career pathway from military into the NHS

NHS Employers worked with Step Into Health, a programme designed to help people leaving the Armed Forces find careers in the NHS. The challenge was that many service leavers had transferable skills but struggled to get shortlisted because they lacked NHS experience.

NHS Employers supported the rollout of Step Into Health, which offers information days, work experience placements of up to four weeks, and follow-up employment opportunities across pilot NHS trusts. The results were strong: 29 information days attracted 401 attendees, leading to 137 work experience placements, and 72% of those placements resulted in employment in the NHS or elsewhere.
