A NGINX Case Study
Quantum Health is a consumer health‑care navigation company that provides portals for members to manage benefits and claims. Because each client gets a unique site and domain, Quantum Health wanted to move from a shared SAN certificate (which exposed all customer domains) to individual SSL certificates for privacy and security. Their Microsoft IIS setup would have required duplicate backend servers per certificate, so they needed a more scalable, manageable, and zero‑downtime solution.
Quantum Health deployed a high‑availability pair of NGINX Plus instances in front of IIS to handle SSL termination using SNI and per‑virtual‑server certificates, allowing one backend application to serve many domains. They added load balancing, monitoring (NGINX Amplify and Sumo Logic), and automated deployments with Puppet and Rundeck for one‑button site rollouts and live reloads. The result: SSL Labs grades improved from B to A, easier certificate management, the ability to add customers without changing backend configuration, improved visibility and metrics, and scalable high availability with no customer downtime.
