A NGINX Case Study
Montana Interactive, the State of Montana’s eGovernment services provider, runs more than 200 applications and roughly 300 online services for over a million citizens. Their legacy load‑balancing setup—two production VMs with heartbeat failover—was fragile: quarterly traffic spikes and timeouts caused dropped user sessions, required manual restarts, and made deployments risky, so they sought a modern, scalable alternative without the cost of multiple proprietary appliances.
They deployed NGINX Plus as a dynamic reverse proxy and load balancer across VMs and data centers, using advanced health checks, on‑the‑fly reconfiguration, automation, and fine‑grained access controls. The change eliminated disruptive restarts, enabled deployments and configuration changes in minutes, improved page‑load and browser performance, increased availability during traffic spikes, strengthened security/compliance, and delivered enterprise scalability at much lower cost.
