Discovery Education, a provider of digital content and classroom solutions, faced a costly hardware load-balancer upgrade and the need to scale rapidly for domestic growth and international expansion, plus a requirement to modernize video streaming for a growing, multi-device audience.

They replaced hardware appliances with NGINX Plus for software-based load balancing (SSL termination, on-the-fly compression, header manipulation, rate limiting) and deployed NGINX Media Server for streaming. The result: more stable, evenly distributed traffic, faster recovery from failures, significant cost savings by using commodity hardware, and NGINX Media Server now delivers roughly 99.9% of their video streaming—prompting plans to expand NGINX across their infrastructure.
