Vision Care of Maine Says Goodbye and Then Returns to NextGen Healthcare

Vision Care of Maine is a multidisciplinary eye care practice headquartered in Bangor with ten clinics, two ambulatory surgery centers and four optical shops, serving roughly three-quarters of the state with six ophthalmologists and four optometrists. After nearly two decades on NextGen Enterprise PM and later NextGen Enterprise EHR, the practice switched vendors in January 2021 seeking faster ophthalmology documentation templates, but the new platform proved unstable, lacked needed PM features (including ASC billing and per-location reporting), created patient-safety risks and billing failures, and led to significant financial losses.

In April 2021 Vision Care of Maine returned to NextGen—reinstating Enterprise EHR/PM, adopting NextGen Managed Cloud Services, and resuming NextGen RCM Services—which restored workflow and provider satisfaction, enabled customizable specialty templates and faster performance, and improved revenue cycle metrics: 56% decrease in days in A/R, 66% increase in average payment per settled encounter, 29% higher collection rate per encounter, 75% decrease in initial charge lag, 69% decrease in total charge lag, and 29% fewer days to bill.
