SUNY College of Optometry Teaches the Value of Integrated Health IT

SUNY College of Optometry, a Midtown Manhattan institution educating more than 400 students and operating a University Eye Center that cares for roughly 60,000 patients a year across 65 affiliated clinical sites, needed a user-friendly, highly configurable EHR that could support teaching, many simultaneous users, device interfaces and accurate billing across departments. The challenge was to provide flexible workflows and seamless integration so students, faculty and administrators could deliver patient care and learn real-world practice without being hindered by the system.

The college implemented NextGen Enterprise EHR, PM and NextGen Mobile, with clinical systems administrator Karine Grigoryeva customizing templates, multiple workflow options and interfaces to about 30 eye‑care devices. Built‑in alerts and automated fixes improved documentation and billing accuracy, mobile signing reduced paperwork, and students trained on the system from year two graduate ready for practice—improving efficiency and demonstrating clear educational and operational results.
