A NextGen Healthcare Case Study
Shared IT, led by Mirth solutions reseller Kevin Stutting, founded Midwest Health Exchange to solve a pressing HIE need in the Quad Cities (Iowa/Illinois). The region required seamless exchange of lab and patient data among hospitals, labs and providers, but many organizations relied on costly point-to-point interfaces and the local hospital lacked capacity to build one-to-one connections. The team needed a cost-effective, supported platform that could simplify many interfaces and scale with growing document-exchange needs.
They invested in a commercial Mirth Connect implementation as the HIE engine, building a single “collapse point” interface from the hospital to Midwest Health Exchange and then out to individual providers. Within three months they were moving live lab data, established a regional Patient Health Bank, launched document-exchange workflows, and saved hospitals and practices tens of thousands of dollars—while benefiting from multi-channel support, minimal downtime for upgrades, and a scalable foundation for future growth.
