Preview of the Rhode Island Medical Imaging Case Study

Radiology practice shares data with 15 EHRs and counting!

Rhode Island Medical Imaging (RIMI), a multi-site radiology practice with seven locations and a long history of patient care, needed a vendor‑agnostic, cost‑effective way to share radiology images and clinical messages with many different EHRs. Rather than pay for proprietary interfaces or external development, RIMI wanted to build and maintain secure interoperability channels in‑house to support orders, results, scheduling and other departmental workflows.

RIMI implemented Mirth Connect’s open‑source integration platform to create HL7 interfaces with drag‑and‑drop scripting, putting Mirth “in the middle” between their RIS and more than 15 EHRs and ancillary systems. The solution enabled bidirectional, secure data exchange across scheduling, coding, billing and marketing, helped referring providers meet Meaningful Use requirements, reduced reliance on costly vendor support, and delivered improved productivity, accuracy and reliable interface operation over eight years.
