Patient Portal Learn from the Inside Out

Prairie Clinic, S.C., a physician-owned multi-specialty practice in Sauk City, WI, sought an integrated, easy-to-use patient portal to enable secure electronic communication and access to patient health information without adding IT burden. After evaluating options, the clinic chose NextGen Patient Portal and rolled it out beginning in 2009, using super-users and phased staff training to build internal support and drive patient enrollment.

Integrated with their NextGen EHR and practice management, the portal delivered faster, more focused communication, improved PHI documentation, and greater workflow flexibility. By 2013 the clinic had 17,000+ patients and roughly 7,000 portal sign-ups (about 35–40%), realized roughly $1.50 saved per encounter (more than $100K annually), and achieved Meaningful Use Stage 1 for all providers.
