A NextGen Healthcare Case Study
HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern Pennsylvania (HSX) is a nonprofit, provider‑and‑payer consortium created to enable health information exchange across a densely populated, competitive five‑county region serving about four million people and 15,000 providers. Facing disparate systems, institutional rivalry, and initial resistance to a central data repository, HSX needed a robust, vendor‑agnostic messaging platform to connect hospitals, ambulatory practices, behavioral health facilities and payers so clinicians could access timely patient information.
HSX implemented the Mirth suite (Mail, Results, Connect, Match) and adopted a Direct push model for key use cases like admit/discharge and payer-to‑EHR data flow, giving clinicians automatic access to patient history at the point of care. The exchange now holds more than two million patients in its MPI, has exchanged over 200,000 messages in a two‑year span, lists more than 9,000 providers, connects 40+ hospitals, and reports that the majority of messages occur between health systems—improving information flow and supporting broader adoption and care coordination.
