Preview of the Medical Clinic of North Texas Case Study

How a Texas Multispecialty Group is Taking Patient Interaction to the Next Level

The Medical Clinic of North Texas (MCNT) is a 43-location, multispecialty group in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area with 160+ providers serving roughly 40,000–50,000 patients monthly. MCNT was spending most of its staff time handling 80,000–100,000 incoming patient calls a month, mailing 18,000–20,000 lab cards at a cost of $9,000–$10,000 monthly, and coping with inefficient, error-prone message relay between patients, nurses, and physicians.

MCNT integrated the NextGen Patient Portal into its existing NextGen EHR/Practice Management system to move communications into the clinical workflow. The portal enables secure in-chart messaging, full lab-result access, online appointment requests, prescription renewals, and payments; task groups and nightly reports ensure timely responses. Early results include reduced phone and mail burden, faster delivery of results and refills, easier tracking of message flow, about 20% patient enrollment to date, and improved staff efficiency, patient satisfaction, and readiness for Meaningful Use incentives.
