Health Current Gains New Teammate in COVID-19 Battle

Health Current, Arizona’s health information exchange that integrates physical and behavioral health data across roughly 750 participants, faced a critical challenge when COVID‑19 struck mid‑migration to a new platform. The legacy system was struggling with an expanding enterprise master patient index and could not support the urgent need for near‑real‑time COVID‑19 alerts, scalable messaging, and rapid lab connectivity during the pandemic.

Working closely with NextGen Healthcare, Health Current implemented a hybrid migration to the NextGen Health Data Hub that enabled batch, real‑time and event‑triggered “dynamic” alerts. The first COVID‑19 alert service went live in under two weeks, removing data bottlenecks and allowing the HIE to move tens of millions of messages per month, provide near‑real‑time bed mapping for state surge management, improve lab integrations, and deliver timely COVID‑19 results into provider EHRs.
