Connecting IPA physicians to deliver efficiencies through technology

HealthCare Partners (HCP), a large medical group serving nearly 600,000 managed care patients across more than 50 offices in Los Angeles and Orange counties, faced the challenge of connecting Independent Physician Association (IPA) physicians to shared clinical data and workflows. HCP’s PACIS division needed a scalable IT framework to help IPA doctors adopt electronic records and prescriptions, meet quality and incentive program requirements, enable closed‑loop referrals, and deliver proactive preventive care — all while minimizing implementation burden on providers.

HCP partnered with NextGen Healthcare to deploy an integrated suite (NextGen Ambulatory EHR, Practice Management, Health Information Exchange and patient portal) and embedded tools like pursuit lists and lab interfaces. The result was a connected physician community: 165 IPA providers received $3 million in MU1 incentives in 2012, a single 10‑person team supports 375+ PACIS providers, and physicians can now identify ACO patients, share critical data, reduce errors and duplicate work, and better meet preventive care and coding goals.
