A NextGen Healthcare Case Study
Bowen Center, a nonprofit behavioral health provider serving 27 counties across northern and central Indiana and about 37,000 clients annually, faced a strategic challenge: mental health conditions were contributing to premature death among patients and the organization needed to diversify revenue amid new market entrants. Leadership set a goal to deliver whole‑person care by adding primary care and other services, hired a healthcare integration officer, and began strategic planning that led to opening their first primary care clinic in 2020 and pursuing FQHC Look‑Alike status.
To achieve integration they adopted a fully integrated EHR (NextGen Behavioral Health Suite and related NextGen solutions), defined success factors (strategic planning, the right care model and staff, culture change, financial sustainability, and new outcome measures), and rebuilt workflows around unified patient records. The result: clinicians now have comprehensive patient information at their fingertips, stronger collaboration with local hospitals, eligibility for 340B drug pricing through FQHC Look‑Alike status, and plans to expand primary care, dental, and optometry services—improving both lifespan and quality of life for patients.
