Boulder Medical Center’s Rapid Deployment of Virtual Primary Care

Boulder Medical Center, a five-location primary and specialty care practice in Boulder, Colorado with about 400 staff, faced major disruptions in March 2020 when many appointments were canceled and the workforce shifted to remote work. The biggest challenge was getting nearly 90 providers and support staff trained and set up for virtual visits in just two weeks to maintain patient access to care.

The IT team rapidly onboarded staff—using one-on-one training, role‑play, and EHR integration with NextGen Virtual Visits—while marketing ran texting, social media and patient-portal campaigns and trained receptionists on telehealth talking points. The shift enabled care for a wide range of conditions, produced more than 22,000 virtual visits since March 2020 (peaking at 46% telehealth), yielded over 10,000 high-satisfaction responses, lowered no-show rates, and by June the practice was seeing more total patients than the prior year.
