A NextGate Case Study
Leading Health System, a highly ranked Midwest health system with 3 hospitals, 21 clinics and over 1.2 million patient records, faced fragmented patient data across two EHR platforms (Cerner and GE Centricity). Duplicate and potential duplicate records in both systems created clinical uncertainty ahead of a planned migration to a single Cerner EHR, and the organization needed a common patient identifier and longitudinal record capability to support accurate care and data exchange. NextGate was engaged to address these challenges using its Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI).
NextGate’s EMPI was used to identify and reconcile duplicates within and across Centricity and Cerner, assign a common patient identifier, and establish 1:1 mapping of Centricity records to Cerner prior to conversion. The EMPI found 37,000 assumed matches and 68,500 potential duplicates in same-system analysis (7.9% combined) and 114,000 assumed matches and 5,700 potential duplicates in cross-system analysis (9.5% combined), delivered detailed cleanup lists, automated real-time duplicate detection and registration compliance management, and streamlined integration into Cerner—resulting in a cleaner production database and faster, more reliable patient-centered data migration as the system grows.
