Ucla Delivers Highly Flexible and Scalable Storage

UCLA needed a storage platform that could support its fee-for-service IT model while delivering reliable performance, high density for limited floor space, and the flexibility to scale with a wide variety of users and workloads. The university also needed a solution that could be procured at a low enough cost to remain competitive with cloud options and still cover operating expenses. Nexsan’s storage systems were selected to meet these requirements.

Nexsan implemented a series of E-Series Model E60 storage systems configured into five storage pods, each with one E60 SAN and two E60X systems, giving UCLA a scalable architecture that could grow to several petabytes. The deployment was phased, with 250TB online in six weeks and full rollout in eight months. Results included excellent throughput and bandwidth, ultra-reliable operation with only one spindle failure and no downtime, strong density with 240TB in 4U, easy expansion, and lower acquisition and operating costs than comparable alternatives.
