The French National Oceanographic Laboratory Manages Satellite and Numerical Modelling Data Using State-Of-The-Art San Storage Systems

The Midi-Pyrénées Observatory’s LEGOS laboratory, a French oceanographic and geophysics research center, manages large volumes of satellite and numerical modeling data—around 200 terabytes and growing. Its challenge was to build a flexible, secure, and easy-to-manage storage environment that could support scientific projects, protect unique research data, and avoid disrupting network or application performance during backup. To meet these demands, the observatory turned to Nexsan.

Nexsan implemented a high-density SAN Fibre Channel storage architecture using E-Series systems, including an E48 for scientific storage, an E18 for office storage, and later an E48V expansion bay. The solution delivered scalable, redundant, and energy-efficient storage with features such as RAID 6, hot-swappable components, and AutoMAID technology, while simplifying administration and supporting workload performance. The result was a stable, highly available storage platform that improved efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and gave the laboratory the capacity to keep expanding its research data environment.
