Argonne National Laboratory deploys Nexsan Unity across 7 locations with 1PB of raw capacity

Argonne National Laboratory, a multi-disciplinary science and engineering research center, faced the challenge of deploying highly reliable data storage for its Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program. The storage systems had to operate in extreme, remote environments—from arctic locations to ships—with constant vibration, dirty power, and temperature fluctuations, all while collecting vast amounts of climatological data. After unsuccessful experiments with home-grown solutions, the laboratory selected Nexsan Unity systems to meet these demanding requirements.

Nexsan implemented several Unity systems with over 1PB of raw capacity across seven challenging locations. The solution delivered high density, fitting the required capacity into just 12U of rack space where competitors required 20U, and provided the performance needed to handle multiple streams of data input. The result was a highly stable and reliable deployment with no serious failures or downtime, offering the best value of all competing systems and successfully supporting the ARM Program's critical data collection.
