A Nexenta Case Study
VM Racks, a San Marcos, CA-based hosting provider specializing in HIPAA-compliant managed hosting and EMR storage, was experiencing performance and scalability limits as its healthcare customer base grew. Running Openfiler up to about 5 TB, the company faced speed bottlenecks and could not upgrade economically — but lacked the budget or appetite for vendor-locked, high-cost storage from market leaders.
VM Racks deployed NexentaStor in a two-stage rollout (performance upgrade followed by the NexentaStor High Availability Cluster), using dual heads across JBODs with 10 Gbps NFS to enable active-active shared volumes and non-disruptive upgrades. The result was enterprise-class performance and scalability at a fraction of the cost of legacy vendors, enabling VM Racks to keep its low-cost HIPAA hosting plans, avoid vendor lock-in, and grow to more than 200 TB under management.
