The University of Sussex, a leading UK research and teaching institution with over 13,000 students and 2,100 staff, needed a high-capacity, resilient storage platform to support its campus-wide single home-directory service and growing research data. After five years its incumbent system neared end of life, so the IT department sought a reliable, high-performance archival and networking solution.

Working with NAS UK, the university deployed NexentaStor in an HA cluster on Dell R720 servers with SAS drives and SSDs, delivering tiered storage across two data centres (110 TB each) with hourly replication and VMware integration. The implementation brought improved capacity, stability and performance—no reported file‑system issues—plus plans to add 200 TB for HA and opportunities to consolidate and scale campus storage.
