A Nexenta Case Study
Shanghai Patent & Trademark Law Office (SPTL), one of China’s largest international intellectual property agencies based in Shanghai, needed to move from Windows XP–based PCs to a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to support rapid business growth. The firm’s challenge was meeting VDI’s high-capacity storage and performance demands on a limited budget, with traditional storage options proving too expensive.
SPTL deployed NexentaStor software-defined storage on a Cisco UCS C240M3 with Fiber Channel and SSD caching (ARC/L2ARC/ZIL) to provide unified NAS/FC SAN storage for VMware VDI and backup. The solution delivered high IOPS (VDI VMs ≥100 IOPS), dramatically accelerated HDD performance through caching and ZFS optimizations, and allowed easy on-demand scaling—reducing initial investment by 25–60% versus alternatives and targeting a 3–5 year TCO while keeping full functionality and low operational overhead.
