Simply Mail Solutions (SMS), a Warrington, UK–based email and hosting provider, was running up against the limits of its legacy storage as customer volumes and email/Web traffic grew. Replacing the original vendor’s system was prohibitively expensive, so SMS needed a scalable, high‑IOPS, cost‑controlled and vendor‑agnostic storage solution to avoid hardware lock‑in.

Partnering with VA Technologies, SMS deployed a NexentaStor (ZFS) OpenStorage SAN — HA head nodes with deduplication, JBOD expansion and SSD read/write caching — to boost performance and availability. The rollout delivered faster, secure access to customer data, supports rapid mailbox growth (~1 TB in use), cut system‑management time by 90%, and provided scalable, lower‑cost expansion without being tied to a single hardware vendor.
