A Nexenta Case Study
picturemaxx AG, a Munich-based provider of media asset management that aggregates more than a billion media assets and handles spikes of up to 150,000 image uploads per event, faced capacity and performance problems as media usage grew. Its custom Linux-based master‑slave storage lacked high availability, making maintenance, scaling and low‑latency processing (they now handle over 600,000 files daily) increasingly difficult.
picturemaxx implemented NexentaStor High Availability across six clusters (three hybrid HDD clusters totaling >1PB and three all‑SSD clusters for BI and indexing), paired with 10G software‑defined networking. The SDS design delivered lower latency than the previous InfiniBand setup, plus high availability, better vendor flexibility, strong support, and energy savings — enough efficiency to pay back the upgrade within a few years.
