A Nexenta Case Study
EnergieSüdwest is a municipal utility in Germany supplying electricity, gas, water and district heating to over 10,000 households. Faced with growing database and application demands, their four aging EMC/IBM storage systems had reached scalability and performance limits (3,000–4,000 IOPS each), slowing Exchange, Citrix and other services and forcing a full replacement rather than incremental upgrades.
The company deployed NexentaStor on standard HP hardware in a two-site HA cluster, consolidating storage into a single managed pool with RAID-Z2 and Fibre Channel connectivity. The redesign delivered more than 30 TB productive capacity, increased performance to 24,000 IOPS (vs. a 20,000 IOPS target), simplified administration and transparent failover, enabling migrations (including Exchange) and supporting new database and billing services for partner companies.
