A Newsela Case Study
North Clackamas Schools, a district of over 17,000 students, faced the challenge of swiftly transitioning to distance learning amidst inconsistent technology integration across its 28 schools. The district needed to build an equitable and flexible instructional plan aligned with state guidance, prioritizing care and connection. They utilized the digital content platform Newsela to provide initial supplemental learning resources for students and parents during the transition.
The solution involved implementing Newsela's library of authentic and engaging content as a primary instructional resource within their new asynchronous distance learning model. This supported the district's equity goals and allowed for flexible, student-directed instruction. As a result, Newsela helped the district successfully roll out its "Distance Learning for All" plan, which led to more innovative teaching practices and a focus on building trust with the community, especially among historically marginalized populations.
