How Norwalk Public Schools Used Differentiated Digital Content to Make Its Curriculum Accessible to All Students

Norwalk Public Schools, a district with 11,000 students, faced the challenge of differentiating instruction for diverse learners, particularly in STEM. The proliferation of digital tools during remote learning created a need for a streamlined, high-quality, and sustainable resource. They specifically needed to support English Language Learners and other student groups by making grade-level content accessible and maintaining engagement.

The district implemented Newsela's digital content platform, including Newsela Science, ELA, Social Studies, and the SEL Collection. The solution allowed teachers to automatically differentiate texts by reading level, providing all students with access to the curriculum. Newsela empowered teachers to create engaging, relevant lessons, seamlessly integrate SEL, and use built-in quizzes for formative assessment. This led to increased student engagement, provided teachers with a structured backbone for instruction, and built a strong classroom climate.
