A California School’s Plans to Bring SEL to Life with Differentiated Content and Peer-to-Peer Coaching

William Regnart Elementary School, a California school, wanted to improve classroom-level implementation of its existing Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program. The challenge was finding relevant academic content and materials to effectively teach SEL skills alongside core instruction. The school turned to Newsela for a solution, adopting its Social-Emotional Learning Collection.

The solution from Newsela involved using its SEL Collection to provide differentiated, grade-level content for 4th and 5th grade literacy instruction. This was paired with a peer-to-peer coaching model where those older students partnered with Kindergarten buddies to reinforce the concepts. The school's goal was to build student confidence and vocabulary in SEL skills, aiming to make students adept at navigating social situations and expressing their emotions.
