ATLAS Demand Control System - Customer Case Study

The customer, a steel works in Tyne & Wear, faced a challenge with their electricity supply capacity. Their two furnaces had a combined load rating that exceeded their contractual limit of 8.5 MVA, risking significant financial penalties from their supplier. They engaged NewFound Energy to implement a solution using the ATLAS Demand Control System and a customized PLC.

NewFound Energy implemented a predictive control system where the ATLAS logger calculated the ongoing period demand and initiated load shedding through its relays. These signals were processed by a PLC, which provided a 4-20mA output to the furnace control systems, dynamically limiting their power. This hybrid solution successfully controlled the site's peak demand to stay within the strict 8.5 MVA limit, preventing penalties and ensuring a continuous power supply.
