A Networked Energy Services Case Study
Electrica Group, which supplies energy to 3.7 million homes and businesses in Romania, was looking to modernize its electricity infrastructure as part of the country’s smart energy transition. Facing skills shortages, a need to de-risk long-term investment, and uncertainty about the right smart grid approach, Electrica worked with Networked Energy Services (NES) and Adrem Engineering to evaluate smart metering technologies, communications resilience, and the business case for large-scale deployment.
Networked Energy Services implemented NES smart meters using the OSGP standard, integrated with Adrem’s installation and meter data management systems and Electrica’s back-end systems. The pilots deployed about 13,000 meters across Transilvania Nord and Muntenia Nord, achieved over 99.5% communications success with full security enabled, and showed benefits such as reduced manual meter reads, better fraud and loss detection, improved outage resolution, and lower operating costs. Electrica has since expanded the rollout with an additional 77,000 meters and is targeting 1.3 million deployed meters by 2029.
