PREPA restores grid operations after Hurricane Maria with Networked Energy Services and 30,000 smart meters

PREPA, the power utility for Puerto Rico, faced a catastrophic challenge when Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the island's electrical grid, destroying infrastructure and causing a complete blackout for its 1.5 million customers. Networked Energy Services (NES) had a pre-existing deployment of its smart meters and control nodes, and the utility needed real-time insight into the low voltage grid and accurate billing data amidst the widespread destruction.

Networked Energy Services provided immediate on-site technical support to help PREPA recover its IT systems. The NES smart grid system was the first fully functional AMI system to be restored, enabling PREPA to pinpoint outages, direct repair crews efficiently, and collect accurate consumption data for billing without estimation. This provided critical visibility into the recovering grid and prevented the need for estimated customer invoices in deployed areas.
