Case Study: TAURON Dystrybucja achieves interoperable smart metering success with Networked Energy Services

A Networked Energy Services Case Study

Preview of the TAURON Dystrybucja Case Study

Poland’s Largest Interoperable Smart Metering Project

TAURON Dystrybucja, the largest electricity distributor in Poland, aimed to implement a modern and interoperable smart metering system (AMIplus) to manage data and enable two-way communication with customers. The challenge was to find a secure, scalable, and flexible solution that could effectively utilize this advanced metering infrastructure data for business analysis. They selected a solution from vendor Networked Energy Services (NES) based on the Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP) standard.

The solution implemented by Networked Energy Services included providing OSGP-compliant data concentrators and the Grid Operations management software for the head-end system. This multi-vendor system, which also incorporated meters from other suppliers, successfully automated data collection and network management. The results were highly successful, with the system exceeding a key performance indicator of 99.5% availability for daily readings and processing over 50 billion measurements annually. The project provided TAURON with benefits including remote management, advanced fraud detection, and detailed power quality monitoring.
