A Networked Energy Services Case Study
The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), the utility supplying power to Puerto Rico, faced the complete devastation of its electrical grid and IT systems after being struck by two major hurricanes, Irma and Maria. With infrastructure destroyed and no way to gather accurate power data or billing information, PREPA needed immediate technical support for recovery. Networked Energy Services (NES) provided on-site assistance and leveraged its existing deployment of NES System software, Control Nodes, and MTR 5000 series ANSI smart meters to help.
The NES solution restored the advanced metering infrastructure, providing PREPA with real-time insight into the low-voltage grid, which allowed crews to efficiently locate faults and restore power. Critically, the NES System delivered accurate consumption data from the outage through recovery, eliminating the need to estimate customer billing in deployment areas. Beyond technical support, NES's efforts expanded into humanitarian aid, with its team delivering essential supplies and solar light bulbs across the island to assist both the public and utility employees.
