How SEAS-NVE Uses Smart Meters to Manage their Low Voltage Grid

SEAS-NVE, a Danish utility, needed to replace an aging meter infrastructure and improve more than just billing. As solar installations increased rapidly and grid monitoring demands grew, the company wanted better visibility into power quality, outages, and customer energy usage across its low-voltage network. Networked Energy Services (NES) provided the smart metering platform used to support this transition.

Networked Energy Services deployed 390,000 smart meters with partner Eltel Networks, along with data concentrators and NES system software for remote device management, event alerts, load profiling, and power quality monitoring. The result was high reliability, with meters communicating at greater than 99.7% reliability on the same day of installation and a customer complaint rate of just 0.5%. SEAS-NVE also reduced maintenance costs from about 6 million Danish Crowns to as little as 1.5 million, avoided thousands of truck rolls for solar installations, and helped customers save 17% energy in a usage-reduction contest.
