Preview of the Electrica Group Case Study

Electrica Group achieves 99.5% smart meter communications with Networked Energy Services

Electrica Group, a major energy provider in Romania, faced the challenge of modernizing its infrastructure and initiating a smart energy transition amidst a sector-wide skills shortage. They needed to identify the right smart grid technology and partners to de-risk this large-scale deployment and reinvigorate interest in the energy sector. They chose to work with vendor Networked Energy Services (NES) and its OSGP standard-based smart meters to conduct initial pilot projects.

The solution implemented by Networked Energy Services involved deploying its smart meters in partnership with Adrem Engineering. The initial pilot of approximately 13,000 meters achieved a communications success rate greater than 99.5% and provided critical visibility into the low-voltage grid. The proven results led Electrica to initiate ongoing deployments of an additional 77,000 meters. The NES solution delivered significant benefits including reduced manual meter reads, faster outage resolution, improved fraud detection, and the ability to effectively manage the system with the existing skills base.
