NetMotion Mobility Improves Harbor Pilot Safety and Schedule Efficiency

Loodswezen, the Dutch pilots’ corporation that guides ships through busy North Sea ports (including Rotterdam), faced critical navigational challenges when satellite-based positioning and GPRS/3G/4G connections caused frequent application freezes and device reboots on Panasonic Toughbooks, jeopardizing the government-required precision and crew safety. After consulting local provider NetBoss BV, they selected NetMotion Mobility from NetMotion to address unreliable connectivity and mission-critical local position corrections.

NetMotion implemented NetMotion Mobility on the pilots’ Toughbooks (now deployed on more than 700 laptops), delivering stable land-based correction data, eliminating application freezes and frequent reboots, and reducing bandwidth use by about 30% in proof-of-concept tests. The solution cut update latency to under two seconds on average, improved schedule efficiency and safety in docking and lock maneuvers, and reduced wait times in Dutch and Flemish harbors—demonstrating clear, measurable impact from NetMotion’s deployment.
