Smashing Magazine, the long-running developer publication, wanted to move away from WordPress and multiple disconnected tools after running into caching problems, workflow frustration, and limits on design flexibility. They needed a unified, reliable platform that could handle content, subscriptions, comments, ecommerce, and member login while delivering a much faster site.

Netlify built a JAMstack-based solution using its open source ecosystem, including Netlify CMS, along with services such as GoTrue, GoCommerce, GoJoin, and GoTell, plus tools like Hugo and Algolia. The new Smashing Magazine site dramatically improved performance, cutting time to first load from 800 ms to 80 ms, while also giving the team a unified workflow, full design control, and a more scalable, open source foundation.
