A NetIQ Case Study
Karlstad Kommun is a Swedish municipality serving about 84,000 residents with an IT environment that supports roughly 25,000 users—including some 18,000 students and 2,000 teachers—across dozens of schools and administrative sites. The IT team struggled with the sheer scale and seasonal churn of users, time-consuming manual user provisioning, distributed desktop management, and manual licence tracking, all of which drove travel, administrative overhead, and security risks.
Karlstad deployed ZENworks Configuration Management (managing ~6,000 PCs) together with Symantec LiveState for imaging, ZENworks Asset Management for licence control, and Identity Manager to synchronise payroll and student systems for automatic account provisioning. The centralised, automated approach cut technician site visits, improved support and security, identified about a 10% potential reduction in Microsoft licence costs, and saved an estimated 1,500 administration hours per year.
