A NetIQ Case Study
Essent, a leading Dutch energy company serving customers in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium with 12,000 employees and up to €7.4 billion in annual revenue, needed to consolidate IT from three data centers into a single, easier-to-manage site. The move had a tight deadline before a lease expired, had to keep time-sensitive trading servers online, and required minimizing physical servers because of limited space, power, and cooling at the new facility.
Essent used Micro Focus PlateSpin Recon to audit server inventory and utilization and PlateSpin Migrate to execute physical-to-physical and physical-to-virtual moves. In one month and with a team of fewer than eight people, the company migrated 260 Linux and Windows workloads to standardized IBM System x servers and virtualized 50 machines on VMware ESX, cutting data center floor space by 8%, avoiding months of work and more than €3 million in estimated costs, and saving about €2 million on the consolidation project.
