Cologne University of Applied Sciences - Customer Case Study

Cologne University of Applied Sciences (CUAS), Germany’s largest university of applied sciences with about 22,500 students, 414 professors and 1,500 staff across four campuses, needed to simplify and automate identity management as it added services and applications. Its custom user-management system struggled to integrate with a growing application landscape, creating manual workload and delays in provisioning secure, role-appropriate access for students and staff.

CUAS engaged NetIQ Consulting to deploy NetIQ Identity Manager, integrating two source systems (HIS student management and SAP HCM) and 12 target systems (including NetIQ eDirectory, Microsoft Active Directory, GroupWise, Vibe and SAP User Management). Using role-based provisioning, automated workflows, multiple-affiliation support, a self-service portal and Sentinel logging on a SUSE/VMware platform, the university now manages about 30,500 identities and 80,000 permissions with improved data quality, fewer provisioning errors, finer-grained access control and faster account delivery, freeing admins for higher-value work.
