The customer, Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, faced the challenge of manually identifying unfair clauses within lengthy legal agreements, a time-consuming process prone to human error. They partnered with vendor NetGuru to leverage its expertise in natural language processing to create an automated solution for detecting these abusive terms.

NetGuru collaborated with a university to create a dataset and train a machine learning model to classify contractual text. The solution successfully proved that automatic detection was viable, with their best model achieving a high macro average F1 score of 0.87. NetGuru provided the dataset to serve as a benchmark for future systems, contributing to a project that will help protect consumers from unfair agreements.
