The USNS Mercy, a U.S. Navy hospital ship, required a high-speed, secure network to manage communications for its civilian medical staff, patients, and official vessel operations during its COVID-19 response. Their challenge was to quickly deploy a network that could process large amounts of IPsec and GRE traffic and fully utilize a new 1 Gb/s link to shore. They turned to Netgate for a solution using pfSense Plus software and Netgate Professional Services.

Netgate implemented a solution by installing a new Netgate 1537 appliance to handle the encrypted traffic and deployed pfSense Plus in AWS for authentication. With the help of Netgate Global Support for optimal network design and traffic shaping, the ship’s new network prioritized critical medical data. Netgate shipped the hardware overnight, and the solution was operational within a day, fully addressing the Mercy's secure networking throughput needs and providing capacity for future growth.
