The Lisbon School Department, a municipal school district in Maine, needed to upgrade the network connecting its four campuses for over 1,200 students and faculty. Their challenge was to fully utilize new 1 Gbps internet circuits, which were hampered by old, underperforming firewalls, all while operating under a very limited budget and needing a solution resilient to potential hardware failures. They turned to Netgate for a solution.

Netgate implemented a solution using pfSense Plus software on Netgate 5100 appliances at each campus, with a fifth unit kept as a cold spare. This provided a high-performance 1 Gbps router/firewall with robust site-to-site VPN connectivity. With assistance from Netgate Professional Services for deployment, the school department now makes full use of its secure gigabit network, supports remote workers, and has a reliable infrastructure at a fraction of the cost of legacy vendors.
