A Netgate Case Study
Aerostar International LLC, an aerospace innovator specializing in high-altitude balloon and UAS operations, faced the challenge of establishing reliable networking in extreme stratospheric conditions. Their previous hardware could not withstand temperatures as low as -80°C, fit within limited payload space, or meet the low power demands required for months-long, self-powered missions. To solve this, they turned to vendor Netgate and its pfSense Plus software on the Netgate 2100 router.
The solution implemented by Netgate provided a compact, low-power router proven to be resilient in the extreme cold. This enabled Aerostar to achieve reliable, secure networking for telemetry and command-and-control at altitudes exceeding 100,000 feet. The results included successful missions lasting up to a year, optimized flight efficiency due to reduced power and weight, and enhanced capabilities for critical NASA, government, and commercial applications. Netgate's hardware became the backbone of these stratospheric operations.
