Using Cloud Data to Fight Environmental Offenders

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) needed to move 300 TB of litigation backup data to the cloud in just two months while preserving secure, always-available, low-latency access for attorneys and paralegals. The team also required a simple, single interface and reliable handling of large volumes of unstructured evidence without adding complex third‑party tools.

ENRD used NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP (with SnapMirror), a temporary Equinix swing space, Azure, and NetApp Professional Services and Cloud Manager to migrate and manage the data. The result was a fast, seamless migration completed on schedule, no data corruption, simplified single-pane management, secure continuous access, and the ability to replicate or reverse data between cloud and on‑premises as needed.
