UCLA Speeds Time to Market for Research with HPC Infrastructure on NetApp

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE) supports campus-wide high-performance computing (HPC) on the Hoffman2 cluster for disciplines from genomics to particle physics. As datasets grew and cluster utilization hit 95%, legacy NAS devices became an I/O bottleneck, threatening research productivity and straining limited data-center space, power, and cooling.

IDRE standardized on NetApp E-Series storage fronted by NetApp V6290 systems running clustered Data ONTAP, installed with NetApp Professional Services and connected via Fibre Channel and Cisco switches. The new configuration delivers high IOPS and multiprotocol support, 24/7 availability, nondisruptive scaling, and reduced rack space and power use by about one-third—helping researchers get results to market faster while reclaiming engineering time.
