The University of Wisconsin Amps Up SAP Performance and Reliability

The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee SAP University Competence Center (UCC) provides SAP hosting and technical support to more than 150 universities and over 100,000 students, operating 50+ production SAP systems in a private cloud. An aging hard-disk and tape-based infrastructure was creating performance bottlenecks, long restore times, high heat and space demands, and difficulty scaling to match semester-driven peaks in usage.

By deploying NetApp AFF with partner Presidio, the UCC now uses fast AFF snapshots and OnCommand management to provision storage in about 2 minutes and restore systems in roughly 1 minute—cutting restore times from hours to minutes. The all-flash solution improved performance and reliability, reduced floor space and cooling needs, sped software delivery to students, and enabled a roadmap toward SAP HANA and offsite disaster-recovery capabilities.
