Swiss Epilepsy Foundation makes more out of data and saves

The Swiss Epilepsy Foundation (EPI) supports people with epilepsy through social, clinical, and research services and was rapidly accumulating images, videos and neurophysiology data. With flash storage already about 80% full and plans to digitize archives and automate document processing, EPI needed a cost‑effective, scalable way to centralize data without disrupting clinical operations.

Working with partner Aptic, EPI implemented NetApp StorageGRID and FabricPool to tier cold data from flash to object storage—transparent to users and integrated with ONTAP. The solution went live in four weeks, immediately freeing 75% of flash capacity, delivering more than 400 TB of usable storage at a fraction of the cost, improving protection (encryption, replication) and snapshot retention (2 weeks → 12 weeks), and enabling new data‑intensive research and future scalable growth.
