Sauber F1 Team Increases Efficiency and Productivity With NetApp as the Storage Standard

Sauber Motorsport AG, the Swiss Formula 1 team based in Hinwil, faced rapidly growing, high‑velocity data demands from CFD simulations, wind‑tunnel testing, design tools (CATIA) and real‑time race telemetry. They needed a reliable, uniform storage platform that could deliver 24/7 availability on site and a lightweight, high‑performance solution for use at the racetrack.

Sauber standardized on NetApp storage (FAS8040) with MetroCluster for automated failover, NetApp Snapshot/SnapManager for integrated protection, and a FlexPod mobile data center (NetApp, Cisco, VMware) at races. The result was simplified management, lower IT costs, strong business continuity and faster restores, plus significant storage efficiency (10–15% savings on FlexPod, ~65% on VMs), freeing resources for vehicle development and enabling continuous operations both in Hinwil and at events.
