A NetApp Case Study
Polygon Pictures, a long-established 3DCG animation studio, set out to build a third-generation cloud-based production pipeline (PPiP3.0) and virtual studio to enable global collaboration, flexible remote workflows, and efficient large-scale content production. The main challenge was providing reliable, low-cost file access (NFS/CIFS) for many 3DCG applications and managing growing historical datasets while supporting distributed teams and remote rendering.
Polygon deployed NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP on Google Cloud to deliver on-premises-grade NFS/CIFS file services with compression, deduplication and automatic tiering to Google Cloud Storage. Trials showed roughly 20% deduplication and, combined with tiering (only 20–30% of data is active), delivered meaningful storage cost reductions, high reliability, Snapshot-based backup, and a scalable foundation for FlexCache, SnapMirror and containerized workflows—enabling PPiP3.0 to move into production and support global, cloud-first production.
